And with all the change over the past 50 years, there really hasn’t been any until now. With the 2008 election, is real change finally achievable? Even when Obama is elected? Is this so called grass roots upswell real and if it is, will it last? The working Americans have not been united on any one thing in over 60 years. So the ruling class has been able to enslave them (nickel and dime them) for all these years. And now when the ruling class institutions have crashed the working people let them bail themselves out with our tax dollars.
No one will ever help the working class. Not even themselves, unless they do unite and say enough is enough. I fear this will not happen in my life time.

n a stunning indictment of sweeping policy changes during the Bush years, best-selling author Naomi Wolf (The Beauty Myth) makes a chilling case that American democracy is under threat. Investigating parallels between our current situation and the rise of dictators and fascism in once-free societies, Wolf uncovers a number of deeply unsettling similarities-from the use of paramilitary groups and secret prisons to the targeted suspension of the rule of law. With this galvanizing call to arms based on her recent book, she urges regular citizens to take back our legacy of freedom and justice.

When Charles Chaplin was forced to leave the USA in 1952, he found harbor in Switzerland and settled in a small village on Lake Geneva where he lived with his family until the end of his life in 1977. In his autobiography, written from his new home, he calls these the happiest years. In this film, the audience is invited to gain rare insight into his family-life and his love for the circus. Chaplin’s children Geraldine, Michael and Eugene talk about their father and many friends, colleagues and contemporaries share their very intimate memories as well as highly entertaining anecdotes with the viewer. This documentary focuses for the first time on his later films and projects and gives evidence of Chaplin’s prolific years as a musical composer of 500 pieces of music. In this homage, Chaplin’s life will be illustrated by newly found unique footage from private archives.

DEADLY PASSION: TRAGEDY IN KATMAI investigates the fatal bear maulings of bear activist Timothy Treadwell and his companion Annie Huguenard that occurred in October 2003 in Katmai National Park, Alaska. This story unfolded in newspapers and magazines across the globe, reporting Treadwell’s passion for bears, delving into details of Treadwell’s life and outlining the personal cause that ultimately led to his death. However, the details of the story are a source of ongoing controversy and spans issues of bear-human relations that are far greater than the incident itself. DEADLY PASSION examines this tragic event within this context.

I liked this docu/film. It revealed components that up this man Timothy Treadwell. Someone who let his feelings guide him into a very dangerous world. A world where he shouldn’t have lasted a single season. He was onto something. It’s a sad waste to loose Timothy Treadwell and the bears he loved so much. Its so ironic.

Whitwell Middle School in rural Tennessee is the setting for this documentary about an extraordinary experiment in Holocaust education. Struggling to grasp the concept of six-million Holocaust victims, the students decide to collect six-million paper clips to better understand the extent of this crime against humanity. The film details how the students met Holocaust survivors from around the world and how the experience transformed them and their community.

It’s a tale of secret societies, murderous conspiracies and shocking revelations. But is there any historical truth behind the wildly popular novel The Da Vinci Code? Did Jesus and Mary Magdalene marry and have children, producing descendants that walk among us today? Did a furtive cult form to protect “the bloodline of Christ,” and did Leonardo Da Vinci hide clues about it in his best-known paintings? National Geographic takes you around the globe in a search for the reality behind on of the most controversial bestsellers.

In America’s earliest days, there were barn-raising parties in which neighbors helped each other build up their farms. Today, in some churches, there are debt liquidation revivals in which parishioners chip in to free each other from growing credit card debts that are driving American families to bankruptcy and desperation. ‘In Debt We Trust’ is the latest film from Danny Schechter, “The News Dissector,” director of the internationally distributed and award-winning WMD (Weapons of Mass Deception), an expose of the media’s role in the Iraq War. The Emmy-winning former ABC News and CNN producer’s new hard-hitting documentary investigates why so many Americans are being strangled by debt. It is a journalistic confrontation with what former Reagan advisor Kevin Phillips calls “Financialization”–the “powerful emergence of a debt-and-credit industrial complex.” While many Americans may be “maxing out” on credit cards, there is a deeper story: power is shifting into fewer hands. And with frightening consequences.

CALL IT DEMOCRACY takes a serious look at the history of Presidential elections and the Electoral College.

Unlike films which wonder “why,” CALL IT DEMOCRACY presents historical and non-partisan analysis of both the 2000 and 2004 Presidential elections and tells amazing stories such as the 1960 Kennedy v. Nixon recounts, the attempts by Segregationist Third Party Candidate George Wallace to manipulate the Electoral College in 1968, and President Ford’s consideration about whether he should overturn the election results in close states. Those and other elections prior to the 20th century show that “one man one vote” is not always a guarantee if the other party is in power.

The film features interviews with Senator Birch Bayh, author of two constitutional Amendments (the only American to do so since the Founding Fathers), prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi, Prof. Alan Dershowitz, Federal Judge Richard A. Posner, Mary Frances Berry, Chairperson of the US Commission on Civil Rights, Rep. John Conyers, and Rep. Jesse L. Jackson, Jr. on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

In a sweeping study of how elections are controlled by local election administrators, Call it Democracy argues that the Electoral College directly impacted 2002’s Help America Vote Act which tried to eliminate punch card ballots but brought us electronic voting.

Filmed when the author was 81, HENRY MILLER ASLEEP AND AWAKE is a voyage of ideas about life, writing, sex, spirituality, nightmares, and New York that captures the warmth, vigor and high animal spirits of a singular American artist. The man is Henry Miller and the room is his bathroom. It’s a miraculous shrine covered with photos and drawings collected by the author over the course of his long and fruitful life. Graciously, in his raspy, sonorous voice, he points out the highlights of his improvised gallery, speaking of philosophers, writers, painters, mad kings, women, and friends.

WOW…It is true that you learn something new everyday. I have been taught about the Holocaust, but never has it touched my heart like this. It’s nice to know that at any age people are willing to give so much of themselves for such a good reason. I am grateful for this 82 minutes of my day and I am grateful for people like the ones in Whitwell.
